Beach Barbeque

Lucy tried not to think too hard as she headed back to the holiday park. It had been an interesting day, certainly one of contrasts. She had made some new friends, had a couple of new experiences, but despite everything she felt as deflated as the balloon had been by the time Dominic and Rebecca, apparently satisfied with their test flight, had packed it up again for the night.

As she walked, a cold wind blowing in off the sea to force her hands into her pockets, she didn’t want to think about what she had seen from high up in the balloon’s basket. What business of hers was it anyway, if Dan was rekindling his love for an old flame? She’d only known him for a couple of days and there was hardly evidence of a spark between them. If anything, she was surprised he hadn’t run the other way after her relentless chain of embarrassing gaffes. And even if he did like her, how could she ever compete against a social media monster like Elizabeth Trevellian, so rich she had staff who followed her everywhere, so gorgeous she left cracks in the pavement wherever she went from the jaws of unsuspecting gapers hitting the ground.

There was no comparison. Elizabeth—for all her personality defects—was hot property, and about as unsinkable as Lucy’s famous namesake.

It was a no-win situation. Better just to ride it out, do her best to enjoy herself, then make sure that not under any circumstances did she end up down here again next Christmas.

When she got back to the tent, Alan and Valerie were sitting together on the sofa, drinking hot chocolate and watching The Polar Express on TV. With a large sigh, Lucy sat down beside them.

‘Hi, love, how was your day? We were wondering where you’d got to,’ Alan said.

‘I was helping out up at the cricket ground,’ Lucy said. ‘At least I think I was helping.’

‘That’s great. Have you made any new friends?’

‘Dad, I’m not sixteen.’

‘I know that, Frances, but … have you made any new friends?’

‘I suppose so.’

‘That’s great. We’ve been doing our best, too. Oh, is it six o’clock already? Val, we’d better get our walking shoes on. Jen and Mick will be here any minute.’

As if on cue, a sharp zipping sound from nearby was followed by shuffling feet on the terrace outside. A sing-songy voice called, ‘Coo-ee! Good evening, happy campers! Is anyone in there?’

Lucy looked around. ‘What’s going on?’

Valerie gave her a sheepish grin. ‘Beach barbeque. Do you want to come?’

‘But it’s December!’

‘So? Apparently there’s a decent sheltered spot down at the foot of the castle where we won’t all freeze to death. We were told to wrap up warm, though.’

Alan held up a bag. ‘Sausages,’ he said with a proud grin. ‘And not a minute of guilt, either. It’s quite a hike back up the hill, apparently.’

Lucy had barely had time to gather her thoughts, but found herself reaching for her jacket. The options were find out what on earth was going on, or sit around and mope.
